CCC recently reached out to experienced information professionals to gain a better understanding of the ways in which they are incorporating tools with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into their everyday workflows, as well as how they are positioning the use of AI within their organizations.
The following is based on an interview we conducted with Samantha Intriligator, Associate Manager Library Services, and Tiffany Lazo, Senior Library Services Science Specialist, at Regeneron Pharmaceutical.
How has AI changed the work your team is doing or the skills that are essential on your team?
The integration of generative AI resources has transformed the way our Library team operates. With AI at the forefront, our researchers now have the option of using specialized Large Language Models (LLMs) as a starting point, rather than relying solely on traditional search engines.
This shift has necessitated a deeper understanding of AI technologies as a core skill for our information management team members. We work hard to remain at the cutting edge of new information on gen-AI best practices, prompt engineering, and copyright compliance so we can relay this critical information to our colleagues and provide the most accurate and efficient support.
How have you been able to use general interest in AI to raise the profile of your team?
It is standard practice for our colleagues to consult the Library team for questions regarding scientific literature, available resources, and copyright compliance. With the growing attention on AI, we have observed a significant increase in inquiries directed to our team. This surge has created opportunities for us to participate in high-level meetings, collaborate more extensively with our colleagues, and offer additional training on information management tools. Over the past year, this trend has naturally elevated the visibility and perceived value of our team within the broader organization.
How do you expect AI to change your team in the next three years?
While some may worry that libraries could become redundant in the age of AI, we firmly believe otherwise. Human expertise will always be crucial for effectively navigating and leveraging advanced tools. By positioning ourselves as leaders in this evolving landscape, our information management team aims to harness AI to enhance our capabilities, streamline our processes, and deliver even greater value to our organization.
