Important information about royalty distributions

Each year, Copyright Clearance Center distributes millions of dollars in royalty payments to publishers, authors and other copyright holders. The following information provides an overview of our royalty distribution schedule and policies.

Schedule of payments - Royalties are distributed on a quarterly basis as defined by the Schedule of Payments.

Minimum Payment Policy - Royalty payments of $250 or more per licensing service are distributed quarterly, according to the Schedule of Payments. The minimum payment amount is lowered to $50 once annually and royalties of $50 or more are distributed at that time. Royalties that do not meet the minimum payment amount are rolled forward into future periods until the applicable minimum is met.

Service Charge - As a not-for-profit organization, Copyright Clearance Center covers operating costs by retaining as a service charge a percentage of royalty fees collected for rightsholders. The percentage retained can vary by service and level of participation.

Foreign royalties - Copyright Clearance Center maintains bilateral agreements with Reproduction Rights Organizations (RROs) around the world. The RROs work together to distribute royalties to thousands of publishers, authors and other creators for the photocopying of printed texts outside the United States. As the RRO for the United States, Copyright Clearance Center works with foreign RROs to repatriate funds to U.S. rightsholders as appropriate. Click here for more information on foreign royalties or visit the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO).

W8 & W9 tax information - All rightsholders potentially due a royalty payment from Copyright Clearance Center must complete and return an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification and Certification (Form W-8 for non-U.S. taxpayers), regardless of your tax status. If Form W-9 or W-8 is not on file, Copyright Clearance Center is required to withhold and pay to the IRS a designated portion (usually 30% for U.S. taxpayers) of any royalty payment due. Click here for more information on forms W-9 and W-8.

Request a usage report - If you need additional detail about your royalty payment, contact your account representative and request a Title Usage Report.
