About the American Welding Society
The American Welding Society (AWS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1919 dedicated to advancing the science, technology, and application of welding and allied processes, such as brazing and soldering. AWS develops and publishes over 350 industry standards, including the widely used AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel. They have worldwide membership and operate as a global authority for the welding industry.

Peter Portela
Director of Standards Digital Transformation and Product Development at the American Welding Society
Peter Portela is currently serving as the Director of Standards, Product Development at the American Welding Society (AWS), where he has been employed for 10 years. Peter has served as a Program Manager and as the Director of Standards Development for AWS. Peter Portela leads core business optimization and digital transformation initiatives aligned with AWS’s organizational goals. In this role, he oversees strategic projects across Standards Development, manages key partnerships with vendors, SDOs, and resellers, and spearheads the evolution of AWS’s product development strategies to meet future-state business needs.
