Danvers, Mass. – December 10, 2018 – Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a leader in advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation, announces its inclusion in the 2018 Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts list by the Boston Globe Magazine and The Commonwealth Institute (TCI). CCC is listed as #16 of 100 organizations that collectively generated nearly $50 billion in revenue last year.

This is the 17th year that TCI – a Boston-based nonprofit that supports female business leaders – has created the list and the third year that the Globe Magazine has partnered with the group.

“There is no sector where women leaders are not represented in Massachusetts,” said Elizabeth Hailer, Executive Director, TCI. “Together with the Boston Globe Magazine, we are excited to honor our local women business leaders and hope it inspires other women to strive for success in our region.”

“Together, the organizations they lead have a tremendous impact on the Massachusetts economy, in virtually every sector – healthcare, higher education, retail, technology, financial services, and on and on,” said Veronica Chao, Editor, The Boston Globe Magazine. “The Women on this list have often ascended against the odds. They serve as inspiration for all working women who are reaching for success.”

“We are honored to be included in this year’s list along with so many successful women-led organizations,” said Tracey Armstrong, President and CEO, CCC. “However, according to the just-released Women in the Workplace report by McKinsey and LeanIn.org, only one in five senior leadership positions are held by a woman and just one in 25 by a woman of color. So, we still have a long way to go.”

Armstrong brings more than 25 years of experience in rights management with CCC to the industry. Leading the organization through a period of phenomenal change and challenge, she has helped transform CCC’s licensing solutions to meet the needs of today’s world of digital information. Armstrong works with publishers, authors, universities, businesses and industry associations around the world, addressing copyright concerns and establishing new alliances. She frequently speaks at industry events as a thought leader on copyright, digital transformation, and workplace diversity.

Danvers, MA – November 20, 2018 – Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a leader in advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation, announces Vice President of Engineering and Professional Services Álvaro Garcia Neto will be speaking at BioData World Congress 2018 on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and powerful federated search engines can improve discoverability for researchers and provide better results.

With 2.5 million scientific papers published annually (and growing), researchers today are overwhelmed by published information. However, the mismatch between the amount of published information and the ability to consume it creates a serious discoverability problem that hampers knowledge-based enterprises. Standard AI techniques have been used across industries for years, and those same techniques can enable federated search to be context-aware and surface results that are personalized.

“This powerful approach to address discoverability challenges can give institutions, which have the most demanding discovery needs, a significant competitive edge,” said Garcia Neto.

At CCC, Garcia Neto is responsible for driving the design and implementation of advanced technology to empower customers with sophisticated knowledge management solutions, enabling them to integrate, organize, enrich, and mine the vast amounts of information within their ever-increasing digital assets.

The post Resource Access for the 21st Century (RA21) Corporate Pilot Report Published appeared first on Copyright Clearance Center.

]]>
November 6, 2018 – Danvers, Mass. – The International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers (STM) and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) have released their RA21 Corporate Pilot Report, co-funded by Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a leader in advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation. The report identifies best practices for adopting a federated identity approach to streamline the user experience for access to subscribed content outside institutional internet protocol (IP) domains.

CCC, along with publishers, libraries, and other interested parties, have been working together since 2016 toward improved user access to subscribed content across a range of content platforms and devices. The corporate pilot, which began in early 2017, included a survey of Pharma Documentation Ring (P-D-R) companies and confirmed the readiness of those companies for a federated identity management system. The five P-D-R companies that participated in the corporate pilot are: AbbVie, BASF, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Novartis, and Roche – alongside four publisher participants – ACS, Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley.

The three key goals of the corporate pilot were improved user login experience at the publisher sites, provision for granular usage statistics reporting, and the ability to easily set up and maintain Single Sign-On with multiple publishers. The RA21 corporate pilot successfully exceeded each goal. Next, the pilot will move into its post-project phase of identifying potential parties to operate any necessary centralized infrastructure to support the RA21 user experience.

“We were proud to co-fund this pilot from beginning to end as a demonstration of our commitment to industry initiatives and improving resource access,” said Tracey Armstrong, President and CEO, CCC. “We look forward to our continued work with RA21 as it starts preparing for its post-project phase and potentially the creation of a central discovery service.”

“Publishers, researchers, and libraries have relied on IP addresses to authorize content access for many years,” said Babis Marmanis, Executive Vice President and CTO, CCC. “In today’s environment, these groups require more effective solutions to facilitate a seamless, intuitive, and consistent user experience. The RA21 pilot is the first step in reaching this goal.”

“Perhaps RA21’s biggest achievement so far is bringing together all interested parties under one banner to enable cross-industry collaboration focused on solving a critical industry issue for the benefit of all,” said Jo McShea, VP and Lead Analyst, Outsell, Inc. “RA21 is now at the cusp of realizing its ambitions – assuming publisher and institutional buy-in – having met its original stated requirements.”

“The pharma industry as a whole has recognized the need to enable a seamless user experience anytime, anywhere,” said Helen Malone, Director of the Information at GSK and President of the P-D-R. “I’m delighted that the PDR has been instrumental in driving the user requirements from the outset. I’m also thrilled that GSK, on behalf of the PDR, has co-sponsored this important Corporate Pilot to a successful outcome.”

Final best practice recommendations from RA21 are expected towards the end of 2018. Following that, the standard NISO process for recommended practices will be followed.

CCC will host a webinar about the RA21 Corporate Pilot results on November 15 at 10:30 EST/3:30 GMT.

DANVERS, Mass. – Oct. 25 – Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a leader in advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation, is sharing its recent webinar, “Guide to a Plan S Impact Assessment” during International Open Access Week, October 22-28, 2018.

Malavika Legge of the Biochemical Society and Portland Press and Tasha Mellins-Cohen of the Microbiology Society explored what Plan S could mean for the future of publication programs at researcher-supported societies.

“CCC is once again pleased to mark the occasion of International Open Access Week,” said Gretchen Gasser-Ellis, Vice President and Managing Director, CCC. “Over the past decade, International Open Access Week has fostered an important global conversation on the transition to open publishing.”

For 2018, the theme for International Open Access Week is ‘designing equitable foundations for open knowledge.’ The questions this theme raises are especially important at a time when national research funding organizations across Europe have launched Plan S to put pressure on Open Access publishing business models.

Plan S is one of the most important developments in OA publishing since the Finch Report. Announced in September, Plan S is an initiative of cOAlition S, a consortium launched by the European Research Council and major national research agencies and funders from 12 European countries.

CCC is monitoring Plan S and will work closely with all parties to address the accelerated transition to Open Access publishing. As business models and workflows evolve, CCC supports the collaboration of industry stakeholders by creating forums and tools that promote sustainable, transparent, and streamlined practices.

CCC recently hosted a “pop-up” webinar in early October featuring Open Access expert Rob Johnson, founder and director of the UK’s Research Consulting. Johnson offered a 30-minute crash course full of details and insights about Plan S.

CCC is an active partner in the information industry’s transition from subscription content to hybrid and pure Open Access content. The company has built RightsLink Author, the leading industry solution for managing Open Access and related publication charges. For years CCC has brought together key Open Access stakeholders from the author, publisher, institution, funding and vendor communities through roundtables, panel events, webinars, podcasts, and published pieces. CCC is a member of OASPA (Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association), ALPSP (Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers) and STM (International Association of STM Publishers).
