Copyright Clearance Center Signs Content Licensing Agreement With Japan Copyright Licensing System

DANVERS, Mass., Oct. 4, 2007—Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), the world's largest copyright licensing solutions provider, today announced a new bilateral content licensing agreement with Japan Copyright Licensing System Co., Ltd., (JCLS), Tokyo, enabling licensing of published works in Japan and the United States by content users in both countries.

Terms of the deal are identical to an agreement that has been in place with the Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance, Inc. (JAACC) since 1999.

The new agreement is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2008. As with the existing CCC-JAACC relationship, the JCLS agreement will enable Japanese content users to license works in CCC's photocopy repertory, which contains the rights to millions of the world's most sought-after publications. These agreements also enable JAACC and JCLS to license the CCC rights repertory to document delivery companies, while giving CCC's rightsholders options for document delivery pricing in Japan. The agreements also provide U.S. content users access to the JAACC and JCLS repertories of Japanese works.

"We are pleased to have established strong relationships with these leading Japanese content licensing organizations," said Bruce Funkhouser, Vice President of CCC's International Division. "Now content users in Japan can quickly and easily license U.S. content, and CCC's rightsholders can be assured that their works are being effectively protected and licensed in Japan. At the same time, U.S. content users will have access to two comprehensive repertories of Japanese works."

JCLS was established in 2001 and offers a range of licensing options to corporations, business organizations, academic societies, universities, research institutions and individual users. JAACC was established in 1989 by a group of leading academic societies to centrally handle copyright matters.
