Not all photocopying on campus is considered fair use. Permission for classroom handouts is not required when the use is a spontaneous, one-time occurrence. Students are generally permitted to photocopy materials for their own use; however, there are limits. Libraries are generally granted immunity for copyright infringement that takes place on self-service copiers in the library, provided they post the appropriate legal notice.
